Poetry on the Beauty of Nature

While hiking in one of our local natural parks, I remarked upon a gorgeous sight:

To which, after basking in the serenity of the moment, I shared a Note about it, here on Substack, stating how my words could never express the feelings and thoughts this sight inspired within my soul.

But since a reply on that Note encouragingly asked me to try (and since I have pride as a writer that never shrinks from a challenge), here is my sincere attempt to do so.

(in poetic verse, of course ~)

Cor Unum

or as above, so below; as within, so without

1. I have walked up to the seam where the earth and sky are two, are one, are sewn together.

2. I’m a voyeur stumbling into a room, uninvited, surprised at being included. I arrived mid-conversation, pleased I did not interrupt, but was swallowed, instead.

3. In this moment of stolen time, I am a comma in a long, long paragraph, a parenthetical expression really, a simple joining in a stream-of-consciousness, that will move on without me in course, and that I will never read the end of.

4. My soul’s edges go soft as I stand at the shoreline. The pond takes a picture of the whole sky, keeps it, and I try to do so as well. The result is a poor copy taken in trembling hands. I cannot call it honest work.

5. I want to be borrowed like that. I want to spend an afternoon as somebody else's reflection.

6. Peace is the sound in this place, complete in itself, with or without me. My soul, that greedy animal, sits down at the edge, trying to make a meal of what it witnesses.

7. Silence has its own language; the most honest conversations are the ones that live only in the space between what we say and what we mean...
